Round 1

Each week Football Budget columnist Rod Willet will examine the form of players in the WAFL competition and from there publish his Team-of-the-week.

With only four teams playing in the season’s opening round it was a great chance for young players to be included in the first Team-of-the-Week for season 2003.

Clancy Rudeforth looks set to have a good year baring injury with a solid preformance for Claremont last weekend.

Byron Schammer showed in his first game why he was an early pick in last year’s AFL national draft with a solid performance that will please the coaching staff at Fremantle and Chad Jones kicked three goals in his league debut for Claremont.

Shaun Hildebrandt continues to grow as an exciting young prospect for Peel and Paul Johnson showed why the Eagles are so impressed with his early season enthusiasm.

Up against last year’s premiers East Perth and the first fixture in Busselton was always going to be a tough challenge for rookie WAFL coach Steve Turner.

Swans should have come away with the four points but the coach had to settle for a draw, which earned him coach of the week honours.
