Round 2 LOVETT OPENS UP EARLY LEAD

EAST Perth’s Andrew Lovett leads by two votes in the Network Ten Rising Star Award after the first two rounds of the WAFL season.

Lovett was again prominent for the Royals, this week in their win over arch-rivals West Perth.

The 20-year-old from North Heidelberg is in his debut season with the Royals and leads Clancy Rudeforth (CL), Leith Teakle (EF), Zach Beeck (EP) and Byron Schammer (CL) who all have three votes.

The award will be judged each week by a panel of football journalists who collectively will attend each match before voting on a 3-2-1 basis.

To be eligible for the award, players must have played eight league games or less at the start of the 2003 season and must be aged 21 or under at the end of the home-and-away season.

West Coast and Fremantle rookie list players are able to win the award unless they are promoted onto the senior list during 2003. Players who are suspended by the tribunal during the home-and-away season will also be ineligible.

The presentation of the award will be conducted at an end of season function hosted by Football Budget publishers Wright Media.
