Round 1 SCHAMMER AND
LOVETT SHINE
CLAREMONT’S Byron
Schammer and East Perth’s Andrew Lovett share the early lead in the voting for
the Network Ten Rising Star Award.
The pair was
awarded top votes for their performances in the opening round of the WAFL
season in which only two games were played.
Schammer beat out teammate Chad Jones and
Peel’s Shaun Hildebrandt for the three votes, while Lovett was among a few
players eligible for votes from his game against Swan Districts in Busselton.
The award will be
judged each week by a panel of football journalists who collectively will
attend each match before voting on a 3-2-1 basis.
To be eligible
for the award, players must have played eight league games or less at the start
of the 2003 season and must be aged 21 or under at the end of the home-and-away
season.
West Coast and
Fremantle rookie list players are able to win the award unless they are
promoted onto the senior list during 2003. Players who are suspended by the
tribunal during the home-and-away season will also be ineligible.
The presentation
of the award will be conducted at an end of season function hosted by Football
Budget publishers Wright Media.
