SIMPSON MEDAL FACTS

The Simpson Medal has been awarded to the best on ground in the last 47 Grand Finals.

It has only been won by a member of the losing side on six occasions, the last time being in 1985 by Subiaco’s Brian Taylor.

The award has been shared twice – in 1981 by Gary Shaw (Claremont) and Maurice Rioli (South Fremantle), and 1974 by Gary Gibellini (EF) and David Pretty (Perth).

The only multiple winners have been Barry Cable – 3 times for Perth in 1966, 1967, and 1968 – Maurice Rioli – 2 times for South Fremantle in 1980 and 1981 – and Dale Kickett – 2 times for Claremont in 1991 and 1993.

Cable and Rioli are also the only men to have won consecutive Simpson Medals.
