Round 1 PRESCOTT STARS IN
COMEBACK
ASHLEY Prescott
made a fine return to football in the opening round of the 2003 WAFL season and
was judged best afield in the voting for the Football Budget’s prestigious
Player-of-the-Year Award.
Prescott, who
retired at the end of 2001 and spent last year as the colts coach at
Claremont,
is now juggling the duel role of coaching the Tigers colts as well as playing
in the league side under new coach Guy McKenna.
Prescott edged
out debutant and Fremantle draftee Byron Schammer for the top votes, while
another debutant in Robbie Swift also impressed in the game against Peel.
Down in Busselton,
it was another veteran in East Perth
backman David Swan who led the charge for his side.
In the first
country game played as part of the State Government’s Country Sport Enrichment
Scheme, Swan was pivotal in the Royals getting back into the game after
trailing by 15 at three quarter time. The game ended in a dramatic draw.
The voting system
for this award is the same as last season, with football journalists voting on
a 3-2-1
basis for each game.
The winner of the
award will be deemed the fairest and best player, with any player who has been
suspended by the tribunal during the season ineligible for the award. The
winner will receive a generous prize.
The presentation
of the award will be conducted at an end of season function hosted by Football
Budget publisher Wright Media.
